Silverstein has been one of the most diverse bands in our scene for quite some time now. Their music borders on the lines of pop punk, metalcore, and everything in between. Because of this, the headlining tours that they organize are usually reflective on their diverse sound. Their recent headlining tour with Being As An Ocean, Emarosa, Coldrain, and Rarity reflects on this very well and provided an enjoyable night with much to offer the crowd watching on March 28th at Upstate Concert Hall in Clifton Park, New York.
First up was Canadian pop punk newcomers Rarity. A recent Rise Records signee, Rarity’s sound showcase pop punk elements with a post-hardcore twist that helped the band fit in with the rest of the lineup. Although the energy in the crowd was , as many didn’t seem to know who the band was, the energy Rarity showcase during their performance more than made up for it. Rarity is a band to watch ahead of the release of their new album I Couldn’t Be Weaker.
Next was Coldrain, a metalcore band who traveled all the way from Japan to . Their music borders the line between hard rock and metalcore, with some of their songs either incorporating one or both genres. The sound itself led to mixed results, as at times it seemed they were trying a little to hard to be Crown The Empire, but the people in the crowd loved the band and went wild for the few songs that they recognized.
Emarosa has become one of my favorite live acts to catch since I initially saw them on Warped Tour last year. Their stage prescence is very similar to letlive., if a comparison could be drawn to help visualize what . Signer Bradley Walden does giant leaps over the drums, gets piggy back rides from fans, and giving his guitarist a piggy back ride after flipping him over his shoulders without skipping a single beat. The fact that the music they perform comes from my favorite album of 2014 also helps. Emarosa was a big highlight of the night and I am very excited to see them again soon.
Being As An Ocean is a band I had initially liked when they released their debut album Dear G-d but fell out of shortly afterwards. Their following two albums just didn’t do it for me and I gave up on following them. Despite my feelings about their musical output, I can admit that Being As An Ocean life is a completely different animal. Joel Quartuccio is one of the most passionate frontmen I have seen perform in a live setting, completely erasing the crowd/barrier aspect of the show and giving an almost sermon like set in the crowd. The fans responded in equal awe and intensity. The crowd’s interaction and energy with Being As An Ocean showed why they are one of the best live bands around currently.
